Ultraviolet (2006) Synopsis:

Set in the late 21st century, a subculture of humans have emerged who have been modified genetically by a vampire-like disease (Hemophagia), giving them enhanced speed, incredible stamina and acute intelligence, and as they are set apart from "normal" and "healthy" humans, the world is pushed to the brink of worldwide civil war (a war between humans and hemophages) aimed at the destruction of the "diseased" population. In the middle of this crossed-fire is - an infected woman - Ultraviolet (Jovovich), who finds herself protecting a nine-year-old boy who has been marked for death by the human government as he is believed to be a threat to humans.

Ultraviolet (2006) DVD Review:

At ninety-four minutes running time, this must not be much of an extended cut. It is probably a good thing that the extended cut is not much longer, because even at the theatrical length it was grueling to sit through. Ultraviolet tries very hard to impress the audience with new and exciting things, but it is more than apparent that everything seen in the film has been filtered through a computer. There is nothing at stake because computer generated effects don’t inspire suspense the way real stunts do. As action packed as Ultraviolet may be, it is still boring thanks to CGI.

Ultraviolet is written and directed by Kurt Wimmer, who was also responsible for the far better Equilibrium. There are many similarities between the two, except that Ultraviolet is ultimately a very awful film. The film is set in the late 21st Century and there is a new disease called Hemophagia which is plaguing humans. Essentially the disease turns humans into vampires, giving them extra strength while shortening their lifespan. When a rumor comes out that the humans have a cure for the disease in a young boy (Cameron Bright who also played the young boy with the cure in the latest X-Men film as well), Ultraviolet intercepts him.

The action is well choreographed for the most part, and there is plenty of it. I could not figure out why it bored me so much. The film is a rich collection of visuals, but there is something ultimately fake about the entire thing, making it impossible to get involved in the story or the action. Scenes involving the lack of gravity in a car chase just end up looking like a scene out of an animated film, or worse than that; a videogame.

The DVD contains an unrated version of the film, which may give a small amount more bloody swordfights, but ultimately the jump from PG-13 and unrated is not that large. The special features are minimal, but they do include a commentary track with Milla Jovovich and a making of featurette.
