The Unit: Season One DVD Review:

In the past there have been many shows set in an area where The United States were in an altercation, or a war. These shows were extremely successful in many cases, but more often than not these shows had a sense of humor about the political elements. Shows like MASH and Hogan’s Heroes are very different from the shoes about similar issues today. Shows like Over There haven’t been accepted as easily by audiences, at least not as well as the creators might have hoped. For some reason audiences will flock to watch Kiefer Sutherland save the country as a rebellious lone wolf, but they don’t have much interest in soldiers. The Unit has a way of combing the best of both worlds. These are soldiers but they work outside of regular rules. They are a pack of lone wolves.

Based on “Inside Delta Force” by Eric L. Haney and created by David Mamet there are all sorts of elements working for the show from the beginning, but the dialogue and tone don’t always match up. The Unit is a special group of soldiers who don’t even technically exist. These covert Special Forces are sent wherever they are needed, both inside The United States as well as abroad. We join The Unit with a new recruit, played by Scott Foley, along with his young wife and child. He joins a team of men led by 24’s former president, Dennis Haysbert, whose speech pattern might distract from what he is saying for some viewers.

The Unit splits the time on each episode between the happenings on the field when the men are on a mission, and back at home in the special housing community. The men return home occasionally, usually just long enough to have an emotion charged scene with their wife, and the rest of the time in the community is spent with the wives. Some of the melodrama concerning the soldier’s wives is fairly interesting and decently constructed, but the only time that The Unit thrives is when the men are on a mission. Most of the situations that the men are ordered into are creative and thrilling. It’s like watching a team of Jason Bourne soldiers go on spy missions for the government. Often the team is split up or sent on specific missions, which is always fun to watch. Individually each of the characters are interesting, and occasionally are allowed very cool scenes of spy action and intrigue along with brutal and technical soldier precision.

The DVD package contains all thirteen episodes from season one on four discs in two slim-disc containers. The package is compact, but it packs plenty of testosterone. There is an optional commentary track on “SERE”, a particularly brutal and awesome episode. There is also a featurette on disc four. Inside Delta Force is an on-set featurette.
