Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby (2006) Synopsis:
The film tells the story of NASCAR stock car racing sensation Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) whose "win at all costs" approach has made him a national hero. He and his loyal racing partner, childhood friend Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), are a fearless duo -- dubbed "Thunder" and "Lightning" by their fans for their ability to finish so many races in the #1 and #2 positions, with Cal always in second place. When a flamboyant French Formula One driver, Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen), challenges the "Thunder" and "Lightning" for the supremacy of NASCAR, Ricky Bobby must face his own demons and fight Girard for the right to be known as racing's top driver.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby (2006) DVD Review:
Will Ferrell movies since he became a comedic star have been heavily reliant upon gimmicks, often becoming a one-joke film that seem better suited for Saturday Night Live sketches than well thought out films. This isn’t to say that Will Ferrell has stopped being funny, because his cameos are usually the highlights of other comedies and he still has great comedic timing, but often his roles are more caricature than characters. He has played a self-obsessed newscaster, caffeine addicted soccer coach and now a competitive NASCAR driver in Talladega Nights. The one saving grace of these films is usually the supporting cast. Although they are often just as one-dimensional, it at least allows for some variety. Talladega Nights works better than most Ferrell films in the recent past because of the talented cast which includes John C. Reilly (Chicago, Boogie Nights), Sacha Baron Cohen (Da Ali G Show, Borat), and Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile).
With a southern accent and surprisingly rugged looks in Talladega Nights, Ferrell is Ricky Bobby, the latest big thing in NASCAR. He will do anything to win, no matter how much money is lost at the expense of his sponsors. His obsession from winning comes from his deadbeat father who planted this wisdom on Ricky as a child before disappearing. Now Ricky will stop at nothing to win, which is fine with his winning-obsessed wife and rambunctious children. When gay French driver Jean Girard (Cohen) challenges Ricky it ends in a bad crash which leaves Ricky scared to race. His wife leaves him for his best friend and fellow driver, Cal Naughton Jr. (Reilly) and he hits rock bottom. He must overcome his fear to come back and show everyone he can still win.
The DVD has a number of unique features, as well as a number of hilarious extras. There is a gag reel and deleted scenes as well as some bonus track footage, but the humor comes from interviews where the actors stay in character and other fun featurettes. The commentary is perfectly creative as director Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and others pretend to be recording the commentary track twenty-five years from now. Often straying from traditional topics they throw in the fictional history of their careers since making this film.
