I Love New York - The Complete First Season DVD Review:
Within the first minute of the introduction of I love New York, lies the ethos of the show. New York (Tiffany Pollard) monologues on how her heart was broken by Flava Flav twice on the show Flavor of Love and how she’s been given the opportunity to find her own man, her own way, with her own show. She does this all while rubbing Vaseline on her tattooed breast and smoking a cigarette. Welcome to I Love New York, the most absurd dating competition to grace the small screen.
New York picked twenty men from the bottom of the barrel to compete for her affection by participating in competitions that range from building a dog house for her pet Chihuahua to hosting a princess party for preteen girls in order to show off their skills as a daddy. It is asinine to criticize the premise of finding true love through competition, due to the fact that the show is so self-aware of its own ridiculousness. In this complete lack of a facade of seriousness that many reality shows deign to have, the show is disarmingly entertaining. The show does not even try to depict the men after New York’s heart as flesh and blood people, which is made evident when an overexcited contestant charms New York by screaming,“Girl, you putting the hurt on my penis”. The men are given nicknames a porn star would be ashamed to have, further reducing their identities to stereotypes and caricatures.
While the men aren’t three dimensional, they are still vastly entertaining to watch. There’s narrow faced nerd Mr. Boston who could pass for the long lost son of Mr. Rogers, ambiguously gay sometimes go-go dancer 12-Pack, loud mouthed tantrum throwing Chance, and many more. Luckily the overflow of testosterone proves to be even more dramatic than that of the estrogen heavy Flavor of Love. Guys cry, whine, and throw tantrums, turning the mansion into a glorified sorority house. Sister Patterson, New York’s mother, remains the voice of reason, relatively speaking of course. Her observations on the men after New York’s heart are both hilariously blunt and spot on. New York herself proves irresistible to watch with her inflated self-worth and over the top exterior.
While the show is refreshing in its gender reversal of male objectification and its addictive oddity factor, the complete in your face stupidity begins to wear thin around the third episode. The show becomes borderline unwatchable when the men are cut down to four and their inner drama queens are released. New York finds true love in the finale and this inane fairy tale seems to find closure. Of course one episode later in the reunion show, the love is retracted leading into an episode worthy of Jerry Springer and yet another season of insanity for New York. With the exception of previews for New York’s next season, there are absolutely zero extras, which is really the best thing the set has to offer other than a free lobotomy.
