The Game Plan (2007) Synopsis:

The family comedy centers on a professional quarterback accustomed to the bachelor lifestyle who discovers he has a 7-year-old daughter after an ex-girlfriend dies.

The Game Plan (2007) DVD Review:

The Gameplan is the story of Boston “Rebel” mega-star quarterback Joe “The King” Kingman. Joe (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), is a god on the football field, he is obsessed with Elvis Presley, and is in love with himself. He is narcissistic and self-indulgent. His house is adorned with 10’ photos of himself, and he is glued to Sportcenter, so he can see himself on television. What Joe does not realize is that he is lonely. Joe’s only real friend is his English bulldog Spike. But, his life is turned around when an 8 year-old little girl claiming to be his daughter, knocks on his door. Joe’s world is forever changed as he deals with being a new father.

Things are not all that they seem to be as it becomes more and more apparent that Joe’s new daughter, Peyton, may have ulterior motives for suddenly popping up in Joe’s life. She claims that her mother is unreachable while on a humanitarian service trip in Africa. Despite this claim, Peyton manages to receive several telephone calls from her mother. Peyton deliberately sabotages Joe’s personal and professional life. Joe enlists the help of his agent Stella Peck (Kyra Sedgwick) to run damage control to help Joe save face over this new development. After some growing pains, Joe and Peyton begin to forage a heart-warming relationship. Joe and Peyton eventually hit it off and the King learns that life is not worth living without his little princess.

The Gameplan is pretty standard Disney fare. It is highly formulaic and somewhat predictable; several of the jokes can be seen coming a mile down the road. The most predictable humorous plot point, of course, was the impenetrable, rough and tumble football team falling in love with Peyton, changing the team’s dynamic for the better.

Despite its hackneyed plot, The Gameplan is a surprising delight. It was overall significantly better than expected. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson leads both the football team on the field and what ended up being a rather fun and heart-warming film. There are several very funny moments, including a lengthy montage of The Rock learning to dance ballet, lessons that culminate into a humiliating dance recital attended by the entire football team. However, the joke is on the team as they are all moved by the ballet recital. It is a fun, very clean, family-oriented film that children will especially find funny. The Rock does slap stick comedy remarkably well. He also is good with situational humor. At one point, he records promotional commercials with a lisp due to an allergic reaction. All in all, The Gameplan is an unexpected sleeper hit that will have you laughing out loud.

The Special Features section includes Deleted Scenes, Bloopers with Marv Alberts, ESPN’s SportsCenter: The Rock Learns to Play QB, Drafting the Game Plan, and Peyton’s Makeover Madness.

The Gameplan will be released in either Full Frame or Widescreen DVD options. It will also be released on Blu-Ray High Definition. It is presented in 5.1 surround sound, as well as a stereo option, as well as a 2.0 French and Spanish audio track.
