The Odd Couple: The Third Season DVD Review:

Neil Simon wrote a hit play in 1965 that took Broadway by storm. In 1968, he wrote the adapted screenplay that took Hollywood by storm. And in 1970, the American Broadcasting Company aired the hit sitcom that lives on in popular culture and now on DVD. Of course, I’m speaking of The Odd Couple, which has its third season available. Although it doesn’t quite live up to the caliber of the 1968 film, it is still a delightful series that holds up.

The ever-talented Jack Klugman plays Oscar Madison, the sports writing slob who is content with his less than classy lifestyle. Tony Randall brilliantly portrays Felix Unger, the fussy well-spoken eccentric, who works as a photographer. Together they are The Odd Couple, two divorced men who occupy an apartment together while trying not spend too much time at each other’s throats. This third season follows the duo on a number of comical adventures: Oscar hosts his own television show, Felix directs his first television commercial, they both appear on two game shows, they get arrested and stand trial, and they even give their unforgettable Manhattan apartment a makeover. This DVD collection is a perfect addition for anyone who is a fan of the “classic” sitcom, Klugman and/or Randall, or good old-fashioned comedy.

Although I feel that Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon were the ideal candidates for the Couple, perhaps because Lemmon plays the ultimate particular eccentric and Matthau played the part on Broadway, Klugman and Randall do an admirable job and have their own certain chemistry. They have an amazing onscreen relationship that you don’t see very much in sitcoms of the present day and age. Together, they are joined by some memorable characters such as: Oscar’s loyal secretary, Myrna (Penny Marshall), his sharp-tongued ex-wife, Blanche (Brett Somers), Felix’s ex-wife, Gloria (Janis Hansen), and Murray the Cop (Al Molinaro). They make up a complete cast that makes for a good time that still stands up to comedy in the modern age.

This DVD set has no Bonus Material, which is unfortunate. Fans, as well as those enjoying the sitcom for the first time, would appreciate some more insight on how such a classic sitcom came to be and what kind of trials, tribulations, and blessings happened on and off set.

The Odd Couple: The Third Season is a fine addition to any sitcom lover’s shelf as well as to anyone consumed with 1970s television and popular culture at large. Neil Simon’s magic comedy lives on in the sitcom form and now it can be viewed on the ever-popular DVD format.
