Dangerous Crossing (1953) Synopsis:

Dangerous Crossing (1953) DVD Review:

Based on a thirty-minute radio play that was aired in 1943, Dangerous Crossing was the feature film that would come ten years after the radio broadcast, and for this reason the plot may seem to run a little thin at moments. Then again, this was typical of noirs, some of which had such convoluted storylines while others were remarkably simplistic. It doesn’t get much simpler than Dangerous Crossing, and for that reason the film often feels like an extended episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents or The Twilight Zone. This is both a criticism and a compliment, for the suspense is carried out rather effectively, and it is only towards the middle of the film it begins to feel slightly repetitious.

The entire film takes place aboard a cruise ship, and the set may look familiar as it was being used for several other projects at the same time, including Titanic and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but this is just a Hollywood tidbit that isn’t relevant to the film itself. In Dangerous Crossing Jeanne Crain plays Ruth Bowman, a woman of incredible fortune who has just married a man she hardly knows with the intentions of getting to know him on their honeymoon at sea. When they go to sea suddenly Ruth can’t find her husband and nobody remembers ever seeing him. To make matters worse plenty of the crew and passengers begin to think that she is mad and has imagined bringing a husband on the boat with her. There is a great deal of evidence pointing to the insanity of Ruth, even though she receives secret calls from her husband warning her that they are in danger.

Fortunately the ship’s physician, Dr. Paul Manning (Michael Rennie), takes care to watch over Ruth and keep her mind off of things. They start to hit it off, which is bit strange considering Ruth is married, but she needs someone to trust and he seems dependable, so long as she hides the fact that her husband is alive and on the ship. The DVD contains an audio commentary by film historian Aubrey Solomon, as well as a featurette about the film and an isolated score track.
