Mad Money (2008) DVD Review:

This is essentially the second feature, aside from the some television work, from director Callie Khouri, best known for directing The Divine Secret of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. Knowing that makes entering Mad Money much more understandable. There are many issues than must be ignored in the plot, and if you can’t tell by the fact that the three women stars are dancing with money on the DVD cover, this is a film that is meant to be fun above all else. Once that realization is made it is much easier to buy into the premise of the film, outlandish and inaccurate as it may be.

Bridget Cardigan (Diane Keaton) is horrified at the thought of giving up her house and her upper middle class lifestyle when her husband Don (Ted Danson) is downsized out of a job. Bridget thinks that she might be able to get a job, but with an ancient and useless degree she is only able to find manual labor as a janitor at the Federal Reserve Bank, while her husband laments in his misfortune. At work Bridget soon becomes friends with Nina (Queen Latifah), a single mother with two children who destroys the old money every day for a living and Jackie (Katie Holmes), a young and enthusiastic free spirit that pushes the carts with the money. Before long Bridget has devised a plan for the three of them to steal money before it is shredded, thinking it is a victimless crime.

When Don first finds out about the plan he is skeptical, which is not the same reaction that Jackie’s boyfriend has. Soon the men are sitting back while the women steal the money out in a seemingly air-tight con that only gets muddled when they start to get greedy. Eventually one of the security guards becomes suspicious and it only takes a few more mistakes before there is certain trouble. This is film trouble, of course, because Mad Money is a fun caper film, as I mentioned before. There is little at stake, but it is surprisingly enjoyable. The DVD contains a commentary track with Callie Khouri, the theatrical trailer and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
