305 (2008) DVD Review:
305 is a mocumentary comedy, similar to the filmic style of the hit American television series “The Office.” Based upon the successful film, 300, which depicted the final stand of The Battle of Thermopylae.
The Battle of Thermopylae is one of histories greatest stand offs, when a small group of men, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta took on the insurmountable Persian empire led by King Xerxes. These 300 men managed to cause a disproportionate amount of damage to the Persian army, enabling the rest of the Greeks to form a successful naval attack, which eventually led to the Persian defeat.
In the spring of 2007, a film depicting the battle between the Spartans and the Persians titled 300 was released. The film, which was shot entirely on green screen was based upon the hugely successful graphic novel by the same name, written by Frank Miller.
305 is a comedy telling of the 5 guys who did not partake in the famed battle. Instead, these last remaining Spartans, the 5 lowliest members of the illustrious Spartan army, were assigned to protect a goat pass. However, when Xerxes’ men confronted these five losers, they retreated like cowards, allowing for the one weak link in the protection chain to be exploited, allowing for the defeat of the Spartan army.
Now living in exile, these final five remaining men open up a restaurant named Sparties and are hiding in plain sight. Despite the victory, one of Xerxes’ higher ups wants to impress him by completely taking over Sparta for him, and to do such, he needs to find a Spartan leader who still holds a key to the gates of Sparta. Ultimately, these five idiot losers who managed to fail at protecting a goat path, must overcome the Persian army on their own in order to save each other and the rest of Sparta.
305 is a combination of The Office and 300. It is essentially, one long homage to The Office hidden under the guise of a 300 parody. Much like the original 300, 305 is filmed entirely in front of a green screen. However that is where the film’s similarities end. 300 is a spectacular combination of action and green screen compositing creating some of the most fantastic visuals seen in a film. 305 does not. 305 appears to have been shot on a consumer grade camera in front of a green screen. The backgrounds, which were later “painted” are of poor quality, they look like cartoon Flash drawings. In a like manner, the writing is a similar poor quality. The characters, a term used loosely, are poorly formed and crafted with sub par performances. The only exception to this is in the character played by Heaven Peabody, who is a delight to look at and gives the only decent performance in the film. It actually becomes a chore to watch.
The DVD release of 305 includes the 305 Original short, The Making of 305, The Lost Interviews, On the Road With the 305 Visual Effects Featurette, Deleted Scenes, Cutting Room Floor (also usually known as deleted scenes) and multiple commentary tracks.
