Fastlane - The Complete Series DVD Review:

Sometimes things are too good to be true. Fastlane is perfectly constructed, from the Tom Cruise wannabe Peter Facinelli as the heartthrob lead and funny man Bill Bellamy as his partner. Tiffani Thiessen, who has dropped the Amber in her name to distinguish herself as a different actress from those Saved by the Bell days, plays the ultra sexy boss of these two rogue undercover cops. They have seemingly unlimited access to all of the things enviable to young thugs looking to come up in the world and they use these commodities provided by their department, The Candy Store, to catch criminals in sting operations.

The premise is hip and appealing and must have seemed like a sure-fire hit paired with non-stop action and a hip-hop and rock soundtrack, everything pre-fabricated in a hip formula conceived by McG and John McNamera. Unfortunately there are problems with a show like this on a network station. Although there is an incredibly large amount of violence and sexuality in the show, the mood of the show is kept light and cheesy. Even when the show does get dramatic it tends to seem forced. With all of the money spent of staged stunts and fancy clothes for all of the stars too look ridiculously overdressed, apparently no one considered the limited abilities of the actors and writers involved.

Try as he might Peter Facinelli is only accidentally convincing when he is doing anything other than flirting. Likewise, Bellamy’s serious acting is seriously laughable. He acts tough, but paired with the ultra-hip and lingo-infused dialogue it ends up sounding absurd. They have moments together, but the scripts nearly always ruin this with terrible dialogue of a cliché stereotype of how people in L.A. talk. Whatever it is doesn’t work.

If nothing else, the show provides an interesting outlook of the journey for a working actor who isn’t a celebrity. The show aired in 2002-3 and although five years may not seem like much time to have challenged anything in Hollywood, one can see how quickly things move just by watching the entire series. All throughout the twenty-two episodes are actresses and a few actors who appear as guest stars. Many of which now or since then have appeared as stars of their own television show. From Mischa Barton to Jaime Pressley the show is filled with beautiful actresses. Most of the cases involve women, because this allows for the sexual relationships for the two cops.

The entire series is contained on six discs. There are twenty-two episodes in full-frame format, including a few extra scenes in the pilot. The special features include outtakes and bloopers along with featurettes on every expected topic; the action, the stars, and the cars.
