Flakes (2007) DVD Review:

Flakes works extremely hard to be creatively unique, like the pointed outfits worn by Zooey Deschanel in the film. It is a film about a group of nonconformists, and unfortunately the film feels strained in its attempts to portray the trends of the un-trendy, instead feeling scattered and unfocused. To make matters worse, although the location of a cereal bar may seem original enough, the attitudes and dynamic seems to replicate those usually inhabiting record stores in dozens of similarly themed films. The simple premise is dragged through so many unnecessary twists and pitfalls that by the end it is only due to the engaging personality of Zooey Deschanel that Flakes keeps a modicum of believability.

Deschanel is Miss Pussy Katz, a girl who believes so much in anti-conformity that she apparently has no taste. She wears gaudy and tacky clothing and jewelry piled everywhere to create a unique blend of bizarre style, but this is minor considering her choice of a new name. More than anything else Miss Pussy wants her boyfriend to stop working at Flakes, the cereal bar that serves twenty-year-old cereal choices that have been salvaged somehow. The bohemian cereal bar is filled with stoners and obsessive types, and her boyfriend (Aaron Stanford) is the manager and an avid believer in the unique shop. Unfortunately for him Miss Pussy has decided that it is time that he get his act in gear and become a rock star.

Miss Pussy is so determined to convince her boyfriend to finish his first album on his computer that she even offers to work at the cereal shop for him, having just quit her own job, but when he refuses she decides to help a young businessman who has decided to start a chain of Starbuck-like cereal shops just like Flakes. For some odd reason that is never understood or explained, he decides to open up his fancy new cereal shop right across the street from Flakes. At first his chances of improving with his cookie-cutter setup and stiff demeanor seems improbable, but with the help of Miss Pussy, who he aptly re-names Feral for the sake of her nametag, the corporate Flakes becomes a bigger success which threatens her boyfriend and the bohemian shop.
