The X-Files Revelations DVD Review:
There is always a risk trying to rejuvenate an old franchise. Although it is a common practice to try recently, there is never a guarantee that the fan-base that once was will still be interested the way they used to be. I can think of a dozen interests I once had that now seem unbelievably base or uninteresting upon present reflection. This is a concern that is valid and can only be alleviated if interest can be brought back to the subject, but more on that below.
Another concern when bringing back a storyline like the one involved in the conspiracy-ridden show The X Files, which also launched a feature film at the end of the 1990s. Although the show was somewhat episodic, with a new case of bizarre paranormal cases each episode, there was also a thread of conspiracy and betrayal deep in the show. There was a sub-story with Agent Scully’s cancer and the implications behind it, Mulder and his obsession with aliens, and a sexual tension between the two agents that was never resolved when the series finally ended.
The fact that another movie was made is not entirely surprising, because there is a lot that seems to have been left unanswered. This was the nature of the show, but suddenly with the arrival of a new movie many fans may be left wondering what they need to know before seeing it. Part of the dilemma, as previously mentioned, is getting audiences interested in the unanswered questions before giving the answers.
The X Files was the very first show to release an entire season in a box set on DVD, so it is no surprise that the show which was finished long ago continues to change the industry with the type of release. As well as releasing the show in it’s entirety as was practically impossible before DVD, the show has also been released in box sets with thematic episodes paired together. There were many plots that ran through the series run. This collection only contains eight episodes of questionable relevance, but they were handpicked as a companion to the new film.
Some of the episodes are obvious choices, such as the pilot. There are other episodes that show a development between Scully and Mulder, or her journey towards belief in something supernatural. Then there are episodes that simply seem like odd choices. Perhaps this is the mystery which is meant to get people into the theater for the new film. Personally, I’m intrigued.
The two disc DVD set includes a trailer for the new movie along with an introduction to the eight episodes by creator Chris Carter and executive producer Frank Spotnitz. There is also a talent panel with the stars and Carter.
