I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) Synopsis:

Three friends accidently hit and kill someone while they are driving drunk. They opt not to tell anyone about the murder and, in time, they pretend to forget about it. Their crime comes back to haunt them the following summer when they each start receiving mysterious letters from someone who knows what they've done.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) DVD Review:

Coming from his smash success writing the screenplay for Wes Craven’s successful comeback film, Scream, Kevin Williamson suddenly found himself the king of horror in Hollywood at the end of the 1990s. He went from the teen-scene sensation with Dawson’s Creek and suddenly the graphic horror of the semi-spoof allowed him to pursue more bloody goals on the big screen, and I Know What You Did Last Summer only helped to initiate a whole slew of similar teen slasher films. Although I Know What You Did Last Summer lacks the sophistication of Scream, it did a lot to bring youth back to the theaters to be scared. I’ll never forget the theater-going experience I had when I saw this film, and although it doesn’t stand up entirely well even ten years later, I hold a bit of nostalgia with this title however insignificant it may seem.

More than anything else it is the cast that dates this horror film. Although many actors get their start in horror movies, as was the case for Johnny Depp (Nightmare on Elm Street) and Kevin Bacon (Friday the 13th), most of the actors in I Know What You Did Last Summer have careers that have already peaked. In all fairness, other than Jennifer Love Hewitt who was reaching the peak of her career with Party of Five, most of the actors involved were given a chance to star in their first major film with this slasher. Sarah Michelle Gellar was on her way up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer shortly after this and Freddie Prinze Jr. somehow convinced everyone that he was the perfect sterile leading man with his goofball performance here. We can thank this film that he didn’t disappear from the silly teen comedies for years after this. Only Ryan Phillippe has steadily built on the career that led him to this horror film, perhaps most comparable to Depp and Bacon in this way.

These four teenie-boppers-to-be are celebrating their independence and freedom the night that they accidentally run over a man on a curvy road. He is dressed as a fisherman, which isn’t uncommon in their small fishing town, and making the decision that the alcohol in their car will make them likely to be punished, they decide to cover up the death instead. Barely able to function a year later, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) returns home for the summer. Unable to shake the guilt from what they have done she has discovered who the man is that they ran over, but her guilt isn’t enough to spare them from matching notes they all receive in their mailbox upon returning home for the summer. The notes simply say “I know what you did last summer” but when a man dressed as a fisherman, complete with a slick that covers the identity underneath, begins attacking them they realize they must figure out who knows. The fisherman hunts them down and slaughters others around them with a fisherman’s hook, taunting them before their punishment for the mistake they have made.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is directed by British filmmaker Jim Gillespie and the Blu-ray disc includes his short film, “Joyride”, as the DVD did as well. Although there is a BD-Live ability, otherwise the special features for the high definition disc are no different than those from the DVD. There is a commentary track by Gillespie along with a featurette about the making of the film and a music video and trailer.
