Top Gun (1986) Synopsis:

Top Gun takes a look at the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy's prestigious fighter weapons school. Tom Cruise plays Maverick Mitchell, a daring young flyer who's out to become the best of the best. And Kelly McGillis is the civilian instructor who teaches Maverick a few things you can't learn in a classroom.

Top Gun (1986) DVD Review:

If it seems that some films are always getting released in different forms or different packaging, this is probably a good indication that it is a film that is rather popular. Although online shopping has changed our options limitlessly, fewer and fewer retail stores keep a vast collection of multimedia in stock. So whether shopping for DVDs at Best Buy, Target or whatever overpriced store may be in the local mall, there usually isn’t a large enough selection to keep items in stock long after they have been released. Some of the wisest distributors have realized that by re-releasing films on DVD they are insured more time on the shelves for consumers to see. This has two very positive outcomes; both the possibility of a sale, and the free advertising that the film gets on every website and flyer listing the release of the latest edition. Often paired with new titles such as “Special Edition”, “Deluxe Edition”, or “Ultimate Edition” there are new special features and packaging. Even though the film is often exactly the same the newest edition is made more and more enticing, tormenting fans that have already purchased the previous edition. It is bad for the fan, but ultimately good for the film.

Top Gun is an easy choice as one of the 80s classic, from the romance to the drama all the way into the action-filled jet dogfighting. Tom Cruise stars as Maverick, an unstoppable young pilot chosen for an elite Navy program with his wingman, Goose (Anthony Edwards). Maverick is used to being the best, even though he isn’t good at following rules or taking orders, but when he joins the Top Gun program he is faced with challenges he didn’t expect, including Val Kilmer as Iceman, one of Maverick’s colleagues and competition for the top slot. He also becomes romantically involved with a woman (Kelly McGillis) who ends up being an advisor in his program.

Paramount’s latest re-release does not boast an improvement, but instead simply releases the film with a new theme and promotion. With new flashy packaging that looks made to catch the attention of shoppers, this collection of films is released as the “I Love the 80’s” collection. They are a group of well-known and loved films from the 1980s, and although this is just another way to get the films back on the shelves, I wish the packaging had been slightly less tacky so that I wouldn’t be so hesitant about putting them on my shelf.

Other than the outrageous new packaging there is only one other difference, which is a bonus C.D. included inside the DVD. The C.D. contains four 80s songs featured in the movies, “Lips Like Sugar” (Echo & the Bunnymen), “Chains of Love” (Erasure), “Need You Tonight” (INXS), and “Take On Me” (a-ha). Other than this and a cheap insert promotion for VH1 there is no other change. The discs are even the same as in past releases, making this a quick and easy release, and I’m sure a bargain if you don’t already own the film and won’t mind pastel colors popping out at you.

There is a commentary track by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott along with naval experts along with a series of music videos and promotional material.
