One Last Thing (2006) Synopsis:
"One Last Thing..." tells the story of 16 year-old Dylan Jameison (Michael Angarano) who has terminal cancer. When the charitable organization "United Wish Givers" grants Dylan a last wish, he initially chooses to go fishing with his football hero, Jason O'Malley (Johnny Messner). In a moment of inspiration during the locally televised news conference, Dylan changes his mind and reveals that his actual final wish is to spend a weekend with the supermodel Nikki Sinclair (Sunny Mabrey), whose poster hangs proudly above his bed.
One Last Thing (2006) DVD Review:
Anybody would be moved by the death of a fifteen year old boy. Anytime a film wants to manipulate emotions out of an audience it is always a guarantee that the death of a child or an animal will work. Often it is a cheap shortcut that is used to trick the audience into feeling emotional, and being emotionally attached to a film is almost the same as liking a film. One Last Thing… uses this technique through the entire film as the main character dies of a terminal disease, but fortunately it has an honesty to it which allows us to forgive them for the clichés.
Dylan (Michael Angarano) and his mother, Karen (Cynthia Nixon), are invited to be on television for a make-a-wish foundation. Dylan is only a sophomore in high school, but he is dying from a terminal disease. To make things worse, his father (Ethan Hawke) also passed away at a young age, so Dylan already has a very real idea of death. Although he said that he wanted to go fishing with his favorite sports star, when he stands up in front of the televisions, he tells them he wants to spend a weekend with his favorite supermodel instead. Nikki Sinclair (Sunny Mabrey) hears the request but she is struggling with her own career. She has begun to drink after losing her high school sweetheart, which makes her sensitive to Dylan.
Nikki stops by Dylan’s house, but this is only because of a marketing ploy that her agent is trying to spread. Dylan and his friends set out on a journey to New York in order to get a date with Nikki. As Dylan’s condition worsens, he begins to learn more about life from the people he encounters. Everywhere they go in the city, Dylan is known. Nikki’s agent leaked a photo of him to the newspaper in order to make Nikki look compassionate, which makes it much easier for Dylan to hunt her down in New York as well.
One Last Thing… has the feel of a lifetime film, but it is rated R for language, drug use and sexual content. Dylan and his mother have a unique relationship in the film. Because Dylan knows he is dying, he is not safe about smoking his medication, and his language is naturally foul. It was almost as if the writer realized how cliché his story was, and the dialogue was edgier to try and save it. This works some, but at the most important moments the film is honesty touching no matter what the characters are saying.
The DVD has a director’s commentary track by Alex Steyermark, which will mostly be listened to by family and friends of anyone involved in the film. There are also outtakes and alternate takes and a One Last Thing…episode.
