Private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and fixer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) team up to investigate the disappearance of a young woman (Margaret Qualley) in The Nice Guys, but it’s all about how Black plays with genre conventions and film tropes to constantly upend expectations. Gosling has never been funnier, and in a different, better universe, The Nice Guys would have been a huge hit, and we’d have an incredible comic franchise. As it stands, we only have this movie, so at least we can treasure this outing of March and Healy.
You People (2023)
Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy (Coming 2 America) star in Kenya Barris’s hilarious family comedy You People (Black-ish). You People, co-written by Barris and Hill, brings levity to sensitive topics such as race and generational clashes. Despite being centred on a cute romance, You People’s an undeniably stellar cast, which includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Nia Long, Lauren London, and David Duchovny, are the true standouts, bringing the humour themselves rather than relying on what can be a cliche script. Despite its shortcomings, You People is entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny, just like the frustration you vent out while gaming at aussie online casinos.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a wonderful second chapter in Rian Johnson’s brilliant series of modern mystery movies. The director’s true talent is not only in creating tension, producing laughs, and capturing interesting visuals but also in his subtle misdirection through unexpected puzzles and twists. Daniel Craig (No Time to Die) reprises his role as the intelligent investigator Benoit Blanc and travels to Greece with co-stars Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, and Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision). Janelle Monáe, who pulls double duty in Glass Onion and is ultimately the film’s standout, is undeniably captivating in every scene.
Moxie (2021)
Moxie, based on Jennifer Mathieu’s novel, is directed by Amy Poehler (Inside Out), who also stars in the film alongside Hadley Robinson, Lauren Tsai, and Alycia Pascual-Pena (Saved by the Bell). Robinson plays Vivian, a shy teenager who, inspired by stories of her mother’s rebellious years, organizes an anonymous protest with the help of her friends to confront sexism at her school. As a director, Poehler’s point of view is clear, allowing the screenplay by Tamara Chestna (Something from Tiffany’s) and Dylan Meyer to speak for themselves. Moxie’s empowering message, along with a talented young cast and an adorable romantic subplot, is the highlight of this film, making it ideal for adolescent audiences.
